My Thoughts on Entrepreneurship and Automation

I have always had an entrepreneurial heart! Even as a kid I had lemonade stands and wanted to buy and sell and was always baking for bake sales, etc. It has always been a love of mine. I have also always loved makeup and beauty and getting dressed up. Thank goodness now that I am a grown up I am able to combine both of these loves for my own business. But I am jumping ahead of my story, so let me back up a but and tell you my story.

When I was in my 20’s I bought my first home. I was only 25, and a single woman but I had managed to keep my credit good and used my Veterans benefits to purchase a small (1200) square foot home on a 1/2 acre lot in Fayetteville Arkansas. Just a girl and her dog living in a house surrounded by farmland and cows. It was a great time. Also around that time I started my first Network Marketing business. I became a distributor with Amway and worked to build and grow my business. I attended meetings, sold products, and even signed up a distributor or two, but I never had the success I was seeking, and I think part of that is because I was young and focused more on meeting and dating cute guys than building a business. Also around that time I started dealing with a personal health issue, and needed to focus on getting healthy, so everything else was put by the wayside.

My next foray into my own business venture was baking. I started baking Amish bread and my family and friends LOVED it! So I started making full sized loaves as well as mini loaves and selling them at vendor shows, and craft shows. They were very popular, and I did well with KC’s Kitchen, but to be honest always having those starers around and my freezer full of loaves of bread became tedious, as well as the fact that to bake in your home (especially when you have pets) is not always easy.  My dream was to eventually become automated and be able to rent a space in a commercial kitchen and just bake to my hearts content. I had packaging label ideas, and even thought about the fact hat I might not need to hire a lot of staff, as there are machines that can function and do some of the work.

In fact, over the years I have heard many people talk about their fears of robots or machines taking over the work force and humans losing jobs to automation. If this happens the fear mongers believe machines will replace humans and we will end up at the worst in a “terminator” type of world with machines running things and at the very least with mass unemployment as machines replace people. However, economic advisor Andrew Charlton explains that really isn’t the case and explains how machines really won’t cause massive unemployment, so you can put your fears to rest!

Well, suffice it to say I only remained in the baking business for about two years, and then moved on to a couple of other Network Marketing businesses before I finally found my niche. I now own my own mobile spa business and provide beautifying spa treatments to people in their own homes. Facials, waxing, microdermabrasion, eyelash extensions as well as eyelash and eyebrow tinting. The most wonderful part is my clients get to stay home and I go to them, so it is not only super convenient it is also private and easy! And I think Andrew would agree that those are services that can’t be automated and should be performed by a human.
