Some awesome things I never knew about Australia

I have traveled outside the country and have had the pleasure of getting to know other cultures and see some gorgeous places. One of the countries I would love to visit is Australia. I have always wanted to travel there, and after watching Crocodile Dundee I wanted to go even more.

I mean I had always heard about the amazing aboriginal culture, and the heat and the snakes and the desert and of course the crocs, but I also wanted to know about things I hadn’t learned through movies and TV shows. So I started doing some research on Australia and was amazed by some things I learned.

First of all by watching tv I thought that Aussies drank Fosters lager, a most tasty  drink if I do say so myself. But in fact Foster’s is not seen much in Australia and the favorite beer is dependent on geographic areas of the country.

Did you know that Australia is only slightly smaller then the Continental United States? I don’t know why but I have always thought of Australia as a smaller country, but in fact it is quite large. What is small is the population as compared to the land mass is quite small when compared to the USA, China and Brazil.  While those countries all have at least 20 people per kilometer, Australia only has 2.66. In fact even China and Russia which are huge land masses by comparison have more people per kilometer than Australia.

It is a very diverse country, with our 200 languages spoken by its citizens. There are some political problems at times as well, butI think that can be said of a great many countries around the world. IN fact here in the US we have been dealing with some political turmoil the past few years and even months ourselves. No country is immune to political situations, however, it does not mean those countries are not lovely laces in which to live or visit.

Woman power! Australia was the second country in the world to give women the right to vote! IN Australia when were given the right to vote in 1902, almost 20 years prior to the United States. They were even allowed to be in Parliament at that point. In fact that have already had their first woman Prime Minister from 2010 to 2013.

Higher education is an important part of Aussie culture and recently the government has announced a range of reforms to higher education in their country. This is currently being hotly debated and is an issue of concern for many in Australia.

Are you a beach bum? Then you should definitely consider visiting Australia. Australia has the most beaches of any country  in the world. I suppose this wouldn’t come as a huge surprise given that it is the largest Island in the world. Australian beaches are listed on quite a few of the “best beaches” in the worlds lists , and I for one plan on enjoying some food on the barbie on a beautiful Australian beach while sipping a cold drink (but apparently NOT a Foster’s).

If travel is something you enjoy, Australia might be a place you would want to visit also. Lots to see and do and learn as you roam around this gorgeous country!

Why do young folks sag their pants? My top 10 reasons!

I work with teenagers and young adults.

I live with teenagers and young adults.

I hang out with teenagers and young adults.

I actually pride myself on the fact that I can speak their language and tend to “get” them, (for the most part).  I like hanging out with them.  In fact, I find myself thinking about my own teenage-hood when I am hanging out with them.

My kids don’t read my blog and for that I am often grateful.  After all, since they don’t read the blog I can bad mouth them, talk shit about them, generally smear their names, or I can tell things about myself that I don’t necessarily want them to know.

So, back to my original point, which is that I feel that I “get” them for the most part.  I have learned not to share too much about me, but am able to get them to open up about themselves.  They seem to trust me. And even though my 19 year old always said I was the “best nag” about his homework when he was in high school, I NEVER embarrassed him in front of his friends, or gave him a hard time about his girlfriends.  I am one of those adults who believe that teens can experience true love, and have NEVER said to a teenager, “You don’t even know what love is”.  Of course they do.  They have the same feelings adults do, to the extreme in many cases.  They fall in love.  They care for each other.  The fastest way to stop your teen from listening to you is to tell them they don’t “really” love their girlfriend or boyfriend.

And even though I “get” young people, there are still many things about them I don’t understand.  Many things really haven’t changed from when I was a teen and young adult, (drinking, partying, hanging out with friends, staying up too late,  driving too fast, making reckless decisions, falling in and out of love) but there are also quite a few things that are different (technology, technology, technology). And this! This trend that I have seen for a few years, mainly among young males, although I have seen a few females engaging in this behavior as well. What is it?

Sagging their pants!

This is behavior I just don’t get.  I mean, really, I just don’t understand why they do that.  I can’t even tell you how many times I have wanted to walk up to the young guys I see on the campus where I attend college classes and say to them, “Listen, I know I am a middle aged white lady who just really doesn’t get it, but could you please tell me what it is that goes through your head when you get dressed in the morning, and choose to put on your pants, and then belt them around your thighs?”

What is attractive about this?:
sag pants                                                        Is this sexy????

Ridiculous
Ridiculous

I am a gal who wears my pants at the appropriate place on her body.  Which for a plump, middle aged woman is waist high or thereabouts.  No low riders for me……..no ma’am.  I have a hard enough time keeping the muffin top under control as it is.

But back to the matter at hand…which is why do young men wear their pants so low?  Do you remember the old Letterman top 10 bit?  Well I have developed my own list of:

Why do young folks sag their pants? My top 10 reasons!

10:  They just have too much junk in their pants (i.e. well endowed) and they need more room for things to “spread out”, shall we say….

9. They have just spent lots of money on VERY cool boxers and want to share their amazing undies with the world.

8. The are working on their arm muscles, and having to reach down and hitch up their pants every two steps while they are walking is a mini workout.

7. They have a new amazing belt, and think if they belt their pants around their thighs, you will have more opportunity to see it.

6. There was a super clearance sale at the Big and Tall shop, and they just couldn’t pass up a good bargain, even if the pants are three sizes too big…

5. They received hand me downs from a much larger person, and just couldn’t refuse accepting and wearing them.

4. They have recently lost LOTS of weight and therefore their pants don’t fit properly anymore, and constantly fall down.

3. They have decided they are taking a stand on running, they are just NOT going to do it, hence the low pants…(you can’t run in those things even if you needed to.) People who need to make a fast getaway do NOT wear saggy britches…….Just sayin’……

2. They have decided to boost the economy in their later years by ruining their hips now (have you seen the wide stance walk they have to use to move in their way too big pants), so they can spend money later on things like walkers, canes, etc. to get around.

and the number 1 reason men wear their pants low:

1. They are overheated and just need the butt and nut air conditioning…….

I have to say that I did do some research on this topic, (so I could point out to my sons where it really started), and found that the long held truth that this is about men showing their sexual availability is WRONG and is just a myth. The myth is that this started in prisons so men could show they were “available” for some “attention”. NOT TRUE!   However, the style is related to prison garb, which is usually too large for inmates and they are not allowed belts, so they have to constantly hitch up their pants.  Then some hip hop and rap artists took on the style as their own, and young men, (particularly young urban men) started copying the rappers they admired. Some cities have banned the style, and at my son’s high school “sagging” is not allowed, and you can be sent home if you can’t conform to the dress code.

And who can forget General Larry Platt:

So youth of America, listen to the General!!

Can Trump change once he is the President?

Every day I listen to National Public Radio. Sometimes I tune in to Fox News channel on my XM radio. Sometimes I listen to CNN on my radio. I do my best to get news from different perspectives. I am in my car a lot driving and so I have time to sit and listen to the news.

First things first. I was very worried when Trump won. Although I listened to a very close friend who told me not to worry because he was smart enough to “surround himself with smart people even though he is an idiot”, and worried just a little less. Because I value her opinion, and she is older and usually wiser than me I have tried to pay attention to the confirmation hearings so far. So what I have found is that I am even more confused than I was before.

The one thing I can be sure of (based upon actions so far)  is the President-elect Trump will always stay true to the from of what we have always seen and heard from him. From his days of bashing Rosie O’Donnell, to saying he doesn’t want  a “Mexican judge” on his lawsuit, to the man I always believed to be an egomaniac, and quite frankly not very nice. I used to watch “The Apprentice”, and I was always amused by his way of talking to people and thought his ego was a little too big even then. (and when I say I watched it, I mean I watched it back in the beginning, in 2004 when the not so nice Omarosa was on and subsequently fired). Interestingly,  apparently Omarosa has a job in the White House after Trump takes office.

I just feel that he is who he is. The mean tweets, the outbursts, the inability to listen well, the ego. I am not sure he will be able to take his personality down a notch or two after he takes office. I mean he is no spring chicken…. he is 70 years old………I find it unlikely that a person of that age will change who he is at his core and be able to behave differently than what we have witnessed over the many years he has been in the spotlight….

So I am worried. I just don’t believe he will act one way on January 19 and then a different way on January 21st. The situation with Russia worries me, his way of speaking to people worries me especially when it comes to foreign relations. And I am concerned about the repeal of the ACA without something better to replace it with. I am always hopeful that things will work out okay, but to be honest, I am having a hard time being hopeful.  So many people in this country are scared and don’t know how to feel about what may come.

So for now, I will just wait and see before I make any judgements and I pray that I am absolutely wrong and once he becomes our 45th President he will change and things will not get worse in this country. I never bought into the “make America Great AGAIN” slogan because I think there is so much about America that is already great and has always been great. I have traveled to other countries, and while ours has its faults, it is definitely one of the best places to live in this world!

Crossing my fingers and ever hopeful that Trump can change his ways when he becomes President!
